This traditional Japanese mortar and pestle is made by Motoshige and features a hand-made grooved interior. ‘Suribachi’ and ‘surikogi’ refer to the mortar and wooden pestle. The hand-made grooves facilitate grinding and crushing and the mortar is shaped to keep the ingredients inside the bowl. A silicone ring on the base helps prevent slippage and protects the surface beneath.
Perfect for grinding salt or spices, as well as making guacamole or mixing salad dressings, the Suri Bowl is also elegant enough to serve from at the table.
The Suri Bowl is the product of a collaboration between Mujun, a team of young Japanese designers passionate about bringing traditional Japanese handcraft to a modern global audience, and Motoshige, which has been hand-making suribachi since 1925. Motoshige is in Shimane Prefecture in western Japan, carrying on the craftsmanship of the historic Iwami ware of that region.
